Analytical Description

Description of the host volume: https://library.foi.hr/lib/knjiga.php?B=573&item=H00044

The binding of an altar missal for requiem printed in 1684 and now kept in the old book collection of the parish of Lepoglava, Croatia, was reinforced by means of a narrow fragment of a two-column medieval noted hymnal. This small piece of parchment was pasted onto the spine sometime after 1684 or in the first half of the 18th century at the latest. The tiny fragment, presumably a part of a psalter, reveals two sections of Lenten hymns, namely Christe qui lux es et dies to the Compline (“noctis tenebras detegis, lucisque lu[cis]…”) and Audi benigne Conditor to the Matins (“exhibe remissionis gratiam. Multum / quidem peccavimus, sed parce confitentibus…”). According to its musical notation, scripture, and size, this piece of parchment belongs to a certain group of medieval fragments kept at the ELTE University Library and Archive, Budapest, see F 724, F 725, and F 726. The mother codex is a psalter that was copied in the 15th century according to Pauline liturgical customs, most likely in Lepoglava. The Pauline provenance of the hymnal is confirmed, see the description of F 726, although the musical notation of the manuscript is not typically Pauline.
